Description
A great ivory and malacca Holuska watch cane. The ivory knob handle is 1 1/2” high and 1” in diameter. It sits above a 1/2” silver collar with worn Austrian hallmarks and “800” for the silver content. Just below the handle, a round glass-covered watch face is set into the malacca shaft. It is marked “Patent”. The hands are set by means of a small wheel on the opposite side. The watch winds by turning the ivory and silver top, and the watch ticks. (The Holuska name and the serial number are usually on the internal works that can be accessed by removing the tiny screws.) The shaft terminates with a 7/8” burnished brass ferrule. The overall length is 35” and the condition is very good. It is ca 1890 and it is a wonderful example of a fine watch cane. (Examples of L. Holuska canes plus information on its famous Austrian maker are shown on page 87 of Cane Curiosa, by Dike. He is considered to have been one of the premier makers of fine watches for canes and the Holuska works were exported to several countries around the world). Estimate: $1800-$2800
