Item Details
Description
A fine relic cane from the sidewheel steamer the New Mary Houston. Made from a single piece of hardwood, it has an “L” handle that is 3 3/4” high and 2 1/2” to the side. It is fashioned as a hand with its thumb tucked under ostensibly in a salute. The stem is incised: “New Mary Houston”. The shaft is decorated with a stem and leaves and then it is carved is raised lettering: “Chas. Dowerman, 1881”. It never had a ferrule. The overall length is 36 1/3” and the condition is very good. The New Mary Houston was a Mississippi sidewheel steamboat that plied trade along the river. She was built in 1877 and ended her career in 1893. She had a checkered past and was involved in several accidents the last being in 1893 when she hit a bridge in 1893 and broke up. Mr. Charles Dowerman, maker of the cane was a mate on the New Mary Houston and it is assumed that this cane was made from wood obtained in earlier mis-adventures. (A paper listing Dowerman as a mate will accompany this lot.) Estimate: $700-$900
