Description
A great ivory elk cane. The ivory “L” handle is 1 1/2” high and 5 1/4” long. At the shaft end, a wonderfully detailed head of an elk is depicted. The elk has its mouth agape, a furry neck, and a long rack of antlers. There is a 1 1/2” decorated silver collar inscribed for the owner: “C. A. Gillin”. Additionally it is marked: “Sterling”, and: “F. C. Co.”, for Frank Curtis Company, a Connecticut silversmith established in 1848. The shaft is fine rosewood with a 1 1/4” bimetal ferrule. The overall length is 33 1/2” and the condition is excellent. It is ca 1890, and it is a very fine animal figural example. Estimate: $1200-$1800
