Item Details

Description

A naïve German wood Folk Art cane of Kaiser Wilhelm. Made of a single piece of hand-carved European hardwood, it has a handle that is 2 1/4” high and 1 1/8” at its widest. It depicts the head of the German Emperor Wilhelm II, (1859-1942), the German leader in WWI. The shaft is relief-carved in an ivy vine with interspersed blossoms and a moth, and it was made without a ferrule. The carving is naïve and somewhat crude showing knife strokes throughout. The overall length is 39 1/2” and the condition is very good. It is probably German, ca 1915, and it is a demonstration of the patriotic fervor of the amateur who created it. Estimate: $450-$650
