Description
A very nice Japanese ivory cane of monkeys. The thin carved ivory handle measures 8” long and 3/4” at its widest. It depicts a chain of about twenty intertwined, individual macaque monkeys, clamoring up a tree branch. It is marvelously detailed and is signed in red Japanese characters by the maker. There is a 1/4” silver collar on a thin, shaved bamboo shaft that ends with a 1 1/8” white metal and rusted iron ferrule. The overall length is 37 1/4” and the condition is very good. It was probably fashioned in America with an imported handle, ca 1895. It is a fine Japanese antique example that illustrates the superior Japanese carving of the times, and comes to us from a Texas collector. Estimate: $1000-$1500
