Description
A great California gold and gold quartz cane. The “L” solid gold handle is 2 1/3” high and 3 1/2” to the side. Inlaid in gold beaded bezels at each end of the handle are oval, gold quartz pieces nicely flecked with polished raw gold. The handle is elaborately engraved with fancy “C” scrolling. It is inscribed on one side: “David Price” and on the opposite in Welsh: “ Rhodd ren o California, Gorfhena 20, 1882”, that roughly translates to: “Gift from California, August 20, 1882”. The shaft is exotic snakewood, the aristocrat of fine cane woods, and it terminates with a 1” ivory ferrule. The overall length is 35 1/8” and the condition is excellent. One can assume it was imported to England from America in the 1880’s and presented to David Price of Wales, as a gift. From its condition, it was probably rarely used and was simply displayed. It is a marvelous example of the kind with an unusual provenance. It is the first we have seen with a foreign language presentation. Estimate: $4500-$5500
