Description
A great Centennial Valley Forge encampment relic. Made from a single piece of debarked natural hardwood, it has an “L” handle that is 1 1/8” thick and 3” to the side. Overlaid below the handle is a 1 2/3” by 1/3” rectangular silver cartouche that is inscribed: “Valley Forge Encampment, 1778-1878”. The remainder of the shaft is a taper with polished branch nibs and a 1 1/2” burnished brass and iron ferrule. The overall length is 34 7/8” and the condition is very good. (This relic was undoubtedly made from a sapling cut at the Centennial celebration of George Washington’s infamous encampment at Valley Forge in Pennsylvania during the American Revolutionary War. A paper covering the events will accompany this lot.) It is a great historic example of the type. Estimate: $900-$1300
