Description
A very nice vegetable ivory cane of an Indian. The round handle made of vegetable ivory from the tagua nut, (fruit from a South American palm tree), measures about 2” in diameter. It has a natural brown husk that has been cut away and carved in very good detail, as the face of an American Indian with amber glass eyes and wearing a short, feathered headdress. There is a 3/8” silver cup/collar on an ebonized hardwood shaft with a 1” horn collar. The overall length is 36” and the condition is very good. It is probably English, ca 1895, and was doubtless created during the late 19th Century American Indian craze of the times. It is a fine ivory substitute example. Estimate: $500-$700
