Description
FIRST AND ONLY EDITION OF A SCARCE HUNTING BOOK
RAIMONDI, EUGENIO-BARDI, FRANCESCO. Delle caccie di Eugenio Raimondi bresciano compendiate dal dottor Francesco Bardi. Ornate con bellissime figure in rame da F. Valleggio. Venice, Giovanni Battista Catani, 1675.
Oblong 4to (212 mm x 290 mm), 19th or 20th century binding in half vellum on marbled paper, pp. 16.
12 charming full-page copper plates representing hunting scenes, engraved by Valleggio.
First and only edition of this profusely illustrated essay on hunting.
This work owes its bizarre character to the odd animals involved in the hunts illustrated, such as monkeys, and the evocative descriptions given of animals as the rhino, also called leocornus, of whom it is said that no cages nor weapons could stop it, except “the hands of a modest virgin”. The work is also a testimony of the passion and tradition of Brescia people for weapons and hunting far before the establishment of Beretta’s firm.
References: Just one copy in Italian public libraries.
