A WELL PRESENTED AND FINELY DETAILED 16':1" SCALE FRUIT AND BOXWOOD MODEL OF H.M.S. LEOPARD (1790)
modelled by J. Ryan with plank-on-frame hull, carved stern and quarter galleries, pinned deck with Venetian red gratings and gun trucks, full suite of fitted ships boats over well deck, bound masts with standing and running rigging, yards with s'tuns'l booms and other details, mounted on a burr walnut base with glazed cover. Model measurements - 12 x 15in. (30.5 x 38cm.); Case overall - 16 x 24 x 12½in. (40.5 x 61 x 32cm.); travel box
H.M.S. Leopard was a Portland Class Fourth Rate ordered in 1785, but only completed in 1790. She enjoyed a busy and quite illustrious career and served as a flag ship on three occasions, the last to Vice Admiral Sir George Berkley on the Halifax Station during which time she captured - and released - the U.S.S. Chesapeake in June 1807. She was wrecked in the Gulf of St. Lawrence in 1814.
