AN EARLY 19TH-CENTURY NAPOLEONIC FRENCH PRISONER-OF-WAR BONE SHIP MODEL FOR AN 80-GUN SHIP
the hull carved from plugged shin bone and pierced for brass guns with port lids, carved figurehead and stern galleries, catheads with brass anchors, deck with details including capstan, water barrels, well deck with pierced balustrade, gratings, belfry, companionways, saloon lights, coops etc; the mast with yards, standing and running rigging, mounted on strawwork base inset to raised plush base within glazed mahogany case (wear and damages to masts and rigging, glass cracked). Model measurements -- 6 x 9in. (15 x 23cm.); case -- 10½ x 18 x 9in. (27 x 46 x 23cm.)
Condition
Lacking some cannons and port lids; polychrome to carved areas refreshed; fore and mizzen top gallants hanging loose, rigging in poor condition around the bow, but probably original rigging overall. Straw base lifting at both ends; long boat probably originally located at stern (not on base); later/associated 19th-Century case with warped top, one pane of glass cracked. Model unsecured within case.
