On January 22, 2003, the City of New York granted permission to the artists to realize their vision. The Gates were displayed in Central Park, New York City on February 12, 2005, and remained through February 27, 2005. The project included 7,500 gates that were 16 feet high (4.87 m), had a width varying from 5 feet 6 inches to 18 feet (1.68 m to 5.48 m) and lined 23 miles (36.8 km) of footpaths in the park. The project was comprised of free-hanging, saffron-colored fabric panels that were suspended from the top of each gate, hanging down to 7 feet (2.13 m) above the ground and stationed approximately 12 feet (3.65 m) apart. ëThe Gatesà created a visual golden river appearing and disappearing through the bare branches of the trees, highlighting the shapes of the footpaths. The project not only created jobs for hundreds of New Yorkers who were charged with setting up and dismantling the project, it was also financed entirely by the artists, who never accept sponsorships.
