Description
Marie Bruner Burt Haines (American, 1884-1979). "Portrait of James". Pastel on paper. c1946. Signed with the initials "M.H.B." in pencil lower right. Burt was Haines's married name. Later in her life she initialed many earlier works with her married initials. Cream wove paper. Provenance: Deaccessioned from the Bennington Museum, Bennington, Vermont. Three Haines oil paintings sold at Skinner's (Boston) on September 11, 2009, for $3,081, $2,133, and $1,896, respectively. A thoroughly accomplished painter, her artistic training was impeccable: Cincinnati Art Academy; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; Art Students League; National Academy of Design; Art Institute of Chicago. In the 1920s she was an early member of the Taos, New Mexico art colony. She is especially well known for her pastel portraits of children. Image size: 19 3/8 x 15 in. (492 x 381 mm).
