Obverse
A monument to G. Nevelskoy was unveiled at
Svetlanskaya str. (Vladivostok) on October 26,
1897. G. Nevelskoi, a prominent Russian Seaman
and geographer has made large scale exploration of
the southern coast of the Sea of Okhotsk, Sakhalin
Island, coast of Tatar Strait, the Lower Amur. In the
middle of XIX century Englishmen called them “A
Russian corsair of the Pacific”. He proved the
existence of the strait, separating Sakhalin from the
mainland, accessibility of Amur for large seagoing
vessels, and possibility of navigation
between Sea of Japan and Sea of Okhotsk. The
monument to Admiral Nevelskoi which is one of
the first in Vladivostok was built by capital of
society. It is a tetrahedral obelisk, crowned by the
double headed eagle, with the niche for bronze bust
of the Admiral., on three sides there plates with the
text about activity of Amur Expedition, headed by
Nevelskoy. On the coin the monument is placed
against the Maritime State University named after
admiral G.I. Nevelskoi.
