Description
Islington to Millbank, and Shadwell to Notting Hill Gate, marking the rail network and the site of the American Exhibition in West Brompton, in the extreme lower left corner, index to streets and places printed on verso, colour-printed map on cotton, 170 x 340mm., surface dirt, more heavily soiled at the right or opening side, a short marginal tear at upper edge, on a wooden roller at left side winding into a metal cylinder, 230mm. long, n.p., n.d., [1887]. The American Exhibition of 1887 was intended as a conventional international 'world fair' promotion of the latest industrial, agricultural and commercial developments from the United States, but became far more famous for featuring Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakley in William Cody's Wild West Show. This became a highly popular part of the year's celebrations of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, her own attendance at this show marking her first public attendance of such an event since the death of Prince Albert in 1861.
