Curwen (John Flavel, historian of Westmorland and Cumberland, b. 1860, fl. 1860-1930) The Castles and Fortified Towers of Cumberland, Westmorland, and Lancashire North-of-the-Sands [ & ] The Fortified Dwellings of Cumberland and Westmorland, autograph manuscripts, first mentioned 2 vol., 582pp. & 44pp. index, partly inserted into paper folders, second mentioned 41pp., signed in pencil by the author, some corrections and alterations, some in red ink, sm. 4to, 1913 & n.d. (2). An important history of Westmorland and Cumberland. Published locally in Kendal in 1913 and by Titus Wilson as vol. XIII of the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society's Extra Series, this was the author's life work. Provenance: purchased from the author's estate in the 1950's.
