Description
George Snow Hill (1898-1969) American. Entitled "Breton Interior" on verso. Oil on Masonite. Measures 13" x 17". Good condition. Black light reveals no damage or repairs. Signed . Framed . "Breton Interior by George S. Hill" inscribed on verso. Myers Fine Art and Auction House purchased the entire St. Petersburg, Florida estate of George Snow Hill in 1990. This biographical sketch is taken from a pamphlet entitled "A New Concept in Art Exhibition" which was produced by the George S. Hill Studios, St. Petersburg, Florida November 1, 1954. Born November 13, 1898 in Munising, Michigan, son of George R. Hill, and Mabel Snow Hill. Prepared for college at St. John's School, Manlius, and Mercersburg Academy. Studies Naval Engineering and Naval Architecture at Lehigh University. Was graduated from Crouse College of Fine Arts, Syracuse University with the degree of Bachelor of Painting (B.P.), and elected to the National Honorary Society of Phi Kappa Phi for having attained the highest standing of his Class. Was also awarded the August Hazard Fellowship for foreign study. Member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. ADDITIONAL STUDY: Academie Colarossi and Academie de La Grande Chaumiere, Paris, France for six years. Also studied and painted in Spain, Belgium, Tunis, Algiers, French Morocco and Spanish Morocco. Exhibited regularly in the Official Salon Des Artistes Francaises during six years residence in Paris, and was awarded Honorable Mention. One-man exhibition at the Simonson Galleries in Paris was officially opened by the late Ambassador Myron T. Herrick, and Monsieur Paul Leon, French Minister of Fine Arts. Painting ""Le Balcon"" invited to be exhibited at The Royal Academy, London, England. Work also invited for exhibition in Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Holland. Two one-man exhibitions at the Ferargil Galleries, New York City. Studied stained glass in Chartres, Frances, Paris and other cathedral sites. Died in 1969.
