Description
Civil War Union Documents
1861 "Defense of the Union" by a California Senator
July 20, 1861, "DEFENSE OF THE UNION, Speech of Hon. M.S. Latham, of California, Printed by H. Polkinhorn's Steam Job Press, Washington, DC, Very Fine.
In this historic Imprint, one of the Senators from California, M.S. Latham argues for maintaining the Union at any cost: "...while I have a seat upon this floor, representing a State upon the far-off Pacific, I shall support the constituted authorities in upholding the laws, supporting the Government, and securing obedience to its behests, in the constant and fervent hope that, with as little bloodshed as possible, with as little force as possible, these people may return to their allegiance and their duty to our Government." This 8.25" x 5.25", 16-page pamphlet is disbound but has very clear printing and exceptional content.
