Civil War Union Documents
1864 New York Civil War Era Soldiers’ Bounty Fund, Courier Receipt, and Advertising Column
May 15, 1864-Dated Civil War Period, County of New York Payment Stub and Related Documents for Recruiting Union Troops, Lot of 3, Choice Very Fine.
County Expenditures form, affixed to a Signed Commissioner of Deeds (“Robt. H. Smith”) document, and a printed advertisement: “Draft Postponed! Twelve Hundred Volunteers Wanted.” This lot concerns the struggle for the Union to recruit troops during the final year of hard fighting. Grant’s bloody siege of Richmond was bogged down, and there were no stirring victories to inspire the masses to enlist. Instead, the government was forced to pay bounties to each new recruit (as evidenced by the attached newspaper clipping.) It lists the bounty for army, navy, and marine recruits at $300 per soldier. There is some light toning, along with some edge splits, and a bit of discoloration to the top left corner of the newspaper clipping. (3 Items)
