Abraham Lincoln's Treasury Secretary “Salmon P. Chase” Tintype In Original Carte de Visite Photograph Mount
Tintype Photograph showing a sitting Mr. Salmon P. Chase within its original Carte de Visite Photograph Mount, Choice Very Fine.
This extremely rare, historic Tintype Photograph of Mr. Chase is encased in its original, period, Carte-de-Visite board slip mount. There is no date or photographers imprint, it has some age and trivial marks around the oval holder, overall great condition. Salmon Portland Chase (1808-1873), Served as U.S. Senator from Ohio; the 23rd Governor of Ohio; U.S. Treasury Secretary under President Abraham Lincoln; the sixth Chief Justice of the United States.

Chase articulated the "Slave Power conspiracy" thesis well before Lincoln, devoting his energies to the destruction of what he considered the Slave Power – the conspiracy of Southern Slave owners to seize control of the Federal government and block the progress of liberty. He coined the slogan of the Free Soil Party, "Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men." He is also remembered as a noble defender of Fugitive Slaves.
