1863 The Finest Black History & Slave Related Letter We’ve Seen With A Remarkable “Slave Collar” Illustration
October 8, 1863-Dated Civil War Period, Important Content Manuscript Letter Regarding a Slavery and Specifically a Slave Collar, with a Unique “Slave Collar” Illustration, Choice Very Fine.
Superb Content, Civil War Period Letter, measures 5” x 8”, having 2 pages, written back to back upon a single sheet, Boston. First two paragraphs describe how the individual’s business is doing. Overall in choice bright quality, trivial edge chips, normal folds, being very clean and well written in a fine deep brown ink upon quality laid period paper, with a sharp, crisp penmanship. The second portion of this letter contains the finest content and illustration we have ever encountered regarding Slavery. It is short and to the point, very clear, highlights this person’s total disgust in the treatment of Slaves and why Slavery should be abolished. It reads, in part:

“I have seen the Iron Ring Taken from the Slave girls neck. The ring itself is thick as my Thumb. It is in two half circles which fasten, probably by padlock. This is the shape. There were four prongs originally.” A highly detailed, well hand drawn illustration of the Slave Collar follows just below that text, measuring about 1.75” tall x nearly 2” wide. This Letter continues:

“It is neither perfectly round, nor smooth, but a rough piece of blacksmithery. - If this is not an argumentum ‘um ad homineum (Latin) for the conversion of unbelievers, none can be devised for them. They must be willfully blind.”
