Andrew Johnson Orders Trade West of the Mississippi
June 26, 1865, General Order No. 60, By Gideon Welles on Behalf of President Andrew Johnson, Choice Mint.
7.75” x 5.25”, 5-page order issued by “Gideon Welles”, as an intermediary for Andrew Johnson including three separate proclamations. The first proclamation made by Andrew Johnson states that international trade is open in all ports except for the ones listed starting the first of July. All restrictions to trade East of the Mississippi River except those relating to war contraband are also removed. The other two proclamations relate very closely to the first with slight variations. Signed in print by: “Gideon Welles,” Secretary of the Navy, “Andrew Johnson,” President of the United States, “W. Hunter,” Acting Secretary of State, and “William H. Seward,” as Secretary of State.
