“I am still suffering much!” 1865 Civil War Letter Signed
January 28, 1865-Dated Civil War Period, Autograph Letter Signed, “Monroe,” in brown ink describing Harsh conditions in Florence, Nebraska, Very Fine.
This double-sided Letter measures 10” x 8” written upon lined period paper, addressed to his brother, talking about how sickness has interrupted his plans, how “all the brandy and quinine disappeared rapidly…” during his return trip to Nebraska, how physicians changed his medicine, and that many have died since he left. Monroe “gets very little rest and goes out but little…” He is also waiting for a “settlement”, and decides to build a house on his farm after he recovers from illness. Interesting Civil War period Letter, describing conditions in the West, but nothing directly in response to the war. Letter has small edge splits along the center fold—easily repaired.
