Description
Still life with lobster, 80x100cm, oil on canvas
This work is attributed to an artist in the circle of Cornelis de Heem, son of the great still life painter Jan Davidz de Heem who began painting in Antwerp in 1636.
He was trained in Flanders and united the typically Dutch chiaroscuro with the bright colours of the Southern Netherlands.
The two pewter plates and the fruits they hold remind us of the transience of life and each piece appears so textured it feels like one could almost touch them.
The peeled lemon brings balance to the composition whilst the cherries, oyster and lobster reflect the fleeting beauty of lif. Everything we see will not last long – a reflection also on the nature of human existence.
