The consignor wrote an email about the painting recently (and therefore not available for the printed catalogue) in part as follows: The Jemez Mountains in New Mexico consist of once active volcanoes which ceased erupting a million years ago. The rainstorm over the Jemez in the Hanau oil is ironic and poetic: the sky now erupts with a storm over the once fiery volcanoes; and the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where the first Atomic Bomb was created, is located right there under the huge mushrooming storm cloud, an unconscious prophecy in 1928. The great green trees in the foreground are a comforting contrast to the rainstorm forty miles away.
