Three New Hampshire BBGs: Jos. M. Clough, Michael T. Donohoe, and Alexander Gardiner, DOW
Lot of 3: Clough, Joseph Messer (1828-1919). Clough enlisted as 1st Lieut. of the 1st NH Infy. in April 1861. He mustered out after his 3 months and was commissioned into the 4th NH. He was discharged after 3 years and commissioned into F&S of the 18th NH. He mustered out in July 1865. Clough earned promotions to Captain and Lieut. Col. He also was commissioned Colonel, but not mustered. His brevet BG came with the omnibus awards of March 1865. Cdv with backmark of Benjamin Carr, Concord, NH. Verso with ink and ID. Corners clipped.
Donohoe, Michael Thomas (1838-1895). Donohoe enlisted in August 1861 and was commissioned as Captain into the 3rd NH Infantry. The following summer he was promoted to Colonel of the 10th NH Infy., which had just formed in July, with John Coughlin as Lt. Col. (see lot 349). The unit was engaged in many of the major battles, including Fredericksburg, Drewry's bluff, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Fair Oaks, and the occupation of Richmond. He mustered out in June 1865, having received his brevet Brig. Gen. in March of that year. Backmark of Kimball, Concord, NH. Pencil ID on verso.
Gardiner, Alexander (1833-1864). Gardiner enlisted in Sept. 1862, a 30-year-old New Hampshire lawyer. He was commissioned into F&S of the 14th NH Infy. as a 1st Lieut. The following year he was promoted to Major, and the year after that, to Colonel. He received a brevet Brig. Gen. in Sept. 1864, to date from the day he was wounded at Opequan, VA. He died of wounds received Oct. 8, 1864. Cdv with no photographer's ID, clipped corners, pencil ID and tape residue on verso.
