Description
Two CDVs, Pennsylvania BBGs: Edmund L. Dana and William W.H. Davis
Lot of 2: Dana, Edmund Lovell (1817-1889). Dana enlisted at the age of 45 and was commissioned into F&S of the 143rd PA as its Colonel in Nov. 1862. He was wounded in May 1864 in the Wilderness campaign and, possibly for this reason, captured (confined at Macon, GA). He was exchanged in August. He received a brevet BG in July 1865. He mustered out in August. Cdv with Brady's NY and Washington backmark and NY identification on front. Signed Edmd. L. Dana, Col. 143 P.V. below image on recto. Corners clipped.
Davis, William Watts Hart (1820-1910). Davis enlisted as a Captain on Lincoln's first call, even though he was 40-years-old. He was commissioned into Co. I, 25th PA Infy., a 3-month unit. He mustered out in August and in September, was commissioned Col. of the 104th PA Infy. He was discharged after his three years of service in that unit. He was awarded a brevet BG in March 1865. He is listed as wounded at Fair Oaks, VA in May 1862 and St. John's Island, SC in July 1864 (possibly the reason he did not veteranize in September), although he did live to the "ripe old age" of 90. Cdv with backmark of Gutekunst, Philadelphia.
Provenance: The Robert Trownsell Collection
