Wood, lacquer, inlays, some gilding. Asia, Burma/Myanmar, 19th century – 1st half 20th century
HEIGHT 37 CM
From a German private collection
Figure of a prince of the Konbaug Dynasty, shown in Buddha-like posture and gesture. The figure may be relating to Buddha’s historic origin from a noble house; seated in meditation on lotus with half-crossed legs, wearing a slightly enhanced head attire very similar to Buddha. The left hand (usually the right) held in the bhumisparsha mudra and the right hand once held an object, which is untypically for Buddha, also untypically rendered robe bearing thayo lacquer relief, hair combed back, elongated earlobes, the base with a thayo lacquer relief, all around and with colorful glass inlays, traces of partial gilding, wear due to age.
