A rare little unflattering report on the arid land in Dakota and the northern interior. General Hazen had written a long letter published in the New York Tribune of February 27, 1874, pronouncing, as he says here, "large proportion of the lands of the Northern Pacific Railroad Co. worthless, both for agriculture and as security for money," because of insufficient rainfall. Hazen ends the report with a summary of how very little there was to offer from this land. There was heated debate between writers about the worth of this land, and for a "scathing reply," read John O. Sargent's work  on the subject. Howes H372. A rare report, last offered at auction over 40 years ago.
