He later served at Fort Atkinson, and in 1845 led an escort for emigrants from Fort Leavenworth to Oregon, returning via Bent's Fort. As Captain in command of 200 Dragoons, he disarmed and arrested Colonel Snively's Republic of Texas company of about 100 men, who were attempting to disrupt trade along the Santa Fe Trail. During the Mexican-American War he led the Mormon Battalion from Santa Fe to California. He fought Apache and Sioux, and served in the Civil War.
