French octavo edition of the account of Vancouver's seminal voyage to the Pacific Northwest, Hawaii and around the world. Streeter notes that "Vancouver (1758-1798) was an extraordinarily capable explorer, having sailed with Cook on the second and third voyages (1772-4, 1776-80) and served under Rodney and Alan Gardner. It was Gardner who recommended him for a voyage in search for a northwest passage to the Great Lakes." Among the important features of the work are the engraved views of the Mission of San Carlos and the Presidio of Monterey, which, when they appeared in the original English edition, were probably the first published views of California. The are present in this French edition. Forbes notes that "Vancouver's voyage, particularly his third visit to Hawaii, is of very great importance to the history of the Islands.... Vancouver brought the first cattle to Hawaii from Monterey, California. He is also responsible for introducing the first orange trees, as well as geese, goats, and sheep to Hawaii..." Forbes 343. See Streeter VI 3497.
