This is an extremely rare presentation copy of Jakob Grimm with handwritten dedication ‘An Dr. Rudolf von Raumer in Erlangen’ on the front envelope. Rudolf (Heinrich George) von Raumer (1815-1876) was a German linguist and German literature professor in Erlangen. It is an imprint of the lecture, Jacob Grimm held on 03 February 1842 at the Royal Academy.
This copy is still in fine condition. It is clean and evenly lightly browned. The paper is slightly wavy. The first sheet in the margins is more dusty or moldy. The Last sheet shows stronger foxing and water stains in the lower margin. The envelope is somewhat flawed. The lower corner is torn-off and thus shows partial loss of the name in the dedication.
Jacob Grimm (1785-1863)
Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm was a famous German language- and literary scholar and lawyer. He is also considered the founder of German philology. His life and work is closely connected with that of his younger brother William, after which the oft-used term "Brothers Grimm" results. Until his death, Jacob Grimm taught for 20 years at the Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Berlin, where he worked with his brother on their German dictionary which, should explain the entire New High German vocabulary, as far as it is contained in the works of Luther to Goethe.
