The work presented here is the first Russian edition of this important and extremely rare writing. Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve's work is a detailed scientific report on the Russian Scandinavian meridian arc or shortly called ‘Struve-arc’, named after the famous astronomer Wilhelm Struve.

Under Struves supervision together with the Russian officer Carl F. Tenner (1783-1859), an elongated arc geodetic survey was built in international scientific co-operation from 1816 to 1852 between the Danube and the Arctic Ocean, contributing to the precise knowledge of the earth's surface.

This illustrated volume include accurate maps with measurement points. Because of its importance Struve Geodetic Arc was included in the UNESCO list of World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 2005.



The work is in very fine condition. The leaves are slightly browned with some minor foxing. The cover is slightly rubbed and bumped. Dimensions: 34,2 x 27,8 cm



Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve (1793-1864)

Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve., also called Wilhelm von Struve since 1831, was born 1793 in Altona. At the age of 15 he began to study at the University of Tartu in Estonia. In addition to astronomy, Struve also dealt with geodesy, a branch of applied mathematics and earth sience. From 1832 he was a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg and was also involved in the founding of the Russian Geographical Society. For his work he was awarded numerous honors, including the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society.
