The work ‘Das Beichtsiegel’ by the Austrian writer and priest Hans Kirchstieger was published in 1905. This is his first work as a writer and is tied in 2 volumes, bound in one. It is a popular edition in the first edition, provided with portraits, illustrated titles and 20 plates after Bertold Löffler (1874-1960) - an Austrian painter and graphic designer.

Enclosed is the original sketch of a plate (on page 336) by Bertold Löffler. It is a washed ink drawing in size 13.5 x 9.8 cm, mounted on cardboard and verso also bears an original pencil sketch by the same artist.

The book is in fine condition. The within bound paper cover is slightly toned. Some text leaves are partly slightly cracked at the margins, 2 leaves show tears, one of them (Vol. 2, pp. 11/12) with a small loss of text.



Bertold Löffler (1874-1960)

Bertold Löffler was born 1874 in Liberec, Northern Bohemia. He graduated from the Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule under Franz Matsch and Koloman Moser and since 1900 self-employed. In 1902 Löffler founded together with Michael Powolny the workshop ‘Wiener Keramik’ ( Viennese Ceramics). In the years 1909-1935 he worked as a professor at the Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule and was among others a teacher of Oskar Kokoschka.



Hans Kirchsteiger (1852-1932)

Hans Kirchsteiger was born 1852 in Eberschwang / Upper Austria. He studied philosophy at the University of Vienna and eventually switched to Catholic theology. In 1877 he was ordained a priest in Linz. Some years later, he was suspended from his office as priest and since then used to live as a freelance writer in Salzburg. With his church-critical novels he scored some success; his first book, "Das Beichtsiegel" was published in 35 editions until 1924.
