This postcard was written by the German writer and poet Hermann Hesse some time around 1961. It is adressed to the pharmacist Kurt Münzel in Baden Aargau, the son of Hesse-collector Franz Xaver Münzel: ‘Danke sehr für die Medikamente [...] Ich schicke Ihnen ein kleines Buch aus Ost-Deutschland [...] aber der Bezug von Büchern aus dem Osten ist äusserst schwierig und geht nur auf Umwegen... ‘. The card is provided with the authors handwritten signature.
Hermann Hesse (1877-1962)
The German poet, author and painter Hermann Hesse achieved international prominence with his prosaic works ‘Siddharta’ (1922) and ‘Steppenwolf’ (1927). His poems are also very well-known and rendered him the Nobel Prize for Literature (1946), and the order Pour le mérite for science and art (1954). Several archives and institutes in Germany and Switzerland are entrusted with the administration of his estate. The Hermann-Hesse-Höri-Museum is located in Gaienhofen in Germany, and the Museo Hermann Hesse in Montagnola in Switzerland.
