Carolyn Hurley’s Lifetime African American Quilt Collection from Texas and Louisiana. Over the years and through work with attorneys that probated wills for the states of Texas and Louisiana, Consignor, Carolyn Hurley handled some African American Estates and began to see more & more old Handmade African American Quilts in the Estates she handled for their heirs. Thus started her endless love and collecting of African American Quilts! This extensive Quilt Collection has become a continuing tribute to all of the amazing African American women thru the years that have created the beautiful handmade Quilts of ART. The African American Quilts have been an incredible part of the textile history of the African American culture, dating back to slave days, with their use of coded messages in Quilts that lead the slaves to safe harbors and escape on the Underground RR. African American Quilts vary wildly in style, from not only use of Traditional old Anglo Quilt patterns, but ones that were made out of necessity and for utilitarian purposes, that were scrappy, strippy, ‘whatever they had’ construction, primitive and naive, to create a Quilt for warmth.
This is the largest single group of African American Quilts ever to be sold at auction.
