Description
A Guatemalan wood dance mask used for the Dance of the Conquistadores, South Coast Region, c. 1930’s - 1940’s, representing a Spaniard, nicely carved and with red and black paint. Masks of this region lack the style of those from the Yucatan. H: 8 in (20 cm). Considered very scarce! Ex Peter Bartlett, West Hollywood. The masked dances of Mexico are famous for the sheer number and variety of roles and masks are produced in most of the Mexican states. In Guatemala, as in Mexico, the makers produce masks for the dance and also maintain them, making repairs as needed and often repainting or repurposing them for the various roles as necessary, as the dancers takes their roles very seriously. We refer those with interest to the work by Lechuga & Sayer (1995), Mask Arts of Mexico, for more information.
