Description
GEORGIEVNA MARIE: (1876-1940) Princess of Greece and Denmark and a Grand Duchess by her marriage to Grand Duke George Mikhailovich of Russia (murdered by the Bolsheviks in 1919). A good vintage signed and inscribed 10.5 x 13.5 photograph of the Grand Duchess seated in a formal full length pose. Photograph by George Boucas of Athens & London. Signed with her family name ('Minny') in bold fountain pen ink to a light area at the base of the image and additionally inscribed in her hand 'From the grateful "supermatron" to the Pro!' and dated Harrogate 1914-15. Framed and glazed in the original frame to an overall size of 12 x 15. Some light foxing to the photographer's mount, otherwise VG
The present photograph was apparently presented to Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna (1882-1960) the sister of Tsar Nicholas II and was framed by her in Copenhagen following the Revolution. The original label of the framer, Hansen, is affixed to the verso.
Marie Georgievna was in England when World War I broke out and chose not to return to Russia. Instead she live in Harrogate and was the patron of three military hospitals, as illustrated by the inscription on the present photograph. She generously funded the hospitals and also took an active role in nursing the patients herself.
