Description
School of John Constable (British, 1776-1837), "Figures and Animals by a Stream Below a Pool (Perhaps at Dedham)", mid-19th c., oil on oak panel, unsigned, partially effaced framers' labels en verso, 11 3/4 in. x 9 3/4 in., period giltwood frame with brass plaque . Provenance: Collection of a New Orleans Gentleman; acquired from Kurt E. Schon, Ltd. Gallery, New Orleans, LA. Provenance: Collection of New Orleans Gentleman; acquired from Kurt E. Schon, Ltd. Gallery, New Orleans, LA. Note: This fine oil sketch, very close to those by John Constable, closely parallels another smaller study of his "Anglers at at Stratford Mill", 1811, discovered in 1982, at 7 3/8 in. x 5 3/4 in. (Ian Fleming Williams and Leslie Parris, The Discovery of Constable, London, 1984, p. 133, fig. 59); it even more closely resembles a Constable oil sketch with an exactly similar perspective and church-tower, dated 30 July 1816, rediscovered in 1981 (ibid., color frontispiece). But Fleming and Parris document many close followers and imitators of the master, of which this may well be one of the more inspired works.
