Hermann Herzog (German/American, 1832-1932), "View of Sentinel Rock in Yosemite Valley", c. 1870, oil on canvas, signed lower right, 17 1/4 in. x 24 in., framed Note: Hermann Herzog (1832-1932) was a prominent 19th and early 20th c. landscape painter. Born in Bremen, Germany, he emigrated to the United States when he was in his late twenties, settling in Philadelphia. Herzog was fascinated by the variety of the American landscape and traveled widely throughout the U.S. and Mexico. He painted his way across the western states, arriving in California in 1873. His works from this trip included a series of Yosemite Valley paintings. In 1876, he received an award at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition for his painting of Sentinel Rock in Yosemite, the same subject as the painting offered here.
