Description
A Coptic textile fragment with central medallion, Egypt, 5th – 7th Century AD, linen and wool. The central medallion is composed of a geometric motif within a narrow ring bordered by a wave pattern, parts colored in red and green. It is interesting to note that the decorative medallion on this fragment is originally from another garment and was sewn onto this one in antiquity. One of many examples of reuse of decorative elements on ancient Coptic garments. 10 ½ in x 7 in (26.2 x 17.8 cm). Ex Virginia private collection.
