Place Pigalle, Montmatre Paris has always been inhabited with the best known artists and a favorite haunt of the Impressionists. In the late 1870s on any given night one might find the likes of Manet, Pissaro, Cézanne, Lautrec, Renoir, Matisse, Van Gogh, Gauguin and Degas sipping absinthe, trading tales, swapping ideas and arguing over the latest fashions. The composer Erik Satie was a regular pianist of Nouvelle-Athenes and it was here that in 1898 that he met the young Maurice Ravel; who would later compose his famous Bolero.

Cabarets, burlesque, nightclubs amd the famous Moulin Rouge: In the last half of the 19th century, no less than forty different clubs opened in the Montmartre area, and many closed before 1900. Several of these cabarets and cafes adopted a Rabelaisian theme; the most famous being La Chat Noir; first established in 1881.

There is a current club called La Nouvelle Eve at 25 rue Fontaine in Paris which is an elegant cabaret located in the Montmartre area. They feature some nudity as well as the famous French Cancan. The theater in which La Nouvelle Eve resides was actually built in 1898, and it took its current name in 1949.
