Wine jug with scenes from Greek mythology and of excellent provenance
This piriform oinochoe with trefoil mouth dates back to the 4th century BC. It features a terracotta ground with black slip and red-figure detailing. The decoration depicts a naked, bearded Herakles wearing the skin of the Nemean lion and holding a club and a winged Eros standing before a goddess holding a patera. A meander motif and band of egg-and-dots encircle the neck with ivy along groundline and an elaborate palmette complex beneath handle.
The oinochoe has a prominent provenance. It was previously in the collection of the German author Erich Maria Remarque (1898-1970). The writer is world-renowned for his novel ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’, first published in 1928.
The jug in in undamaged condition with signs of wear consistent with age. The height is 28 cm.
