This rare work features balanced proportions and an archaic form characteristic of Blumenthal’s sculptures.

Hermann Blumenthal (1905-1942)

Hermann Blumenthal came to Berlin in 1925, where he studied under Wilhelm Gerstel and Edwin Scharff. In 1928 he exhibited for the first time at the Prussian Academy of Arts. During several trips to Italy Blumenthal intensively studied Etruscan sculpture. In 1934 he joined the Berlin studio collective Klosterstaße. After the artist’s works initially showed the influence of his teacher Scharff, Blumenthal soon developed an individual formal language, particularly interested in endowing his characters with a ‘soulful’ expression. During the Nazi regime, some of his works were confiscated. The Georg Kolbe Museum in Berlin now holds the estate of the sculptor.
