Very fine and expressive Chryselephantine representation of the famous subjects: Judith with the head of Holofernes; comparable figures of the artist achieve over 13,000 euros at international auctions

The present sculpture by Dominique Alonzo (active 1910-1930 ) represents Judith – with a condescending look, long hair, headband and earrings in an elegant coat and belt with a partly chest. One foot resting on the head of Holofernes, she still holds the sword in both hands. The figure stands on an original, black-green and white veined marble base. This successful work by Alonzo is often interpreted as a representation of Salome with the head of John the Baptist.

The French artist created numerous chryselephantine sculptures of this kind. The high quality materials, the expressive motif and the refined sculptural quality make this work a piece of extremely high collector’s value.



The figure is in very good condition. It was newly mounted onto the original base. There are fine hairline cracks consistent with age to the right shoulder as well as the arms, which do not lessen the very good overall impression. The figure is signed on the back of the garment ‘D. Alonzo’ and numbered ‘5396’ on the underside of the base. The height including the base is 32.5 cm.
