Description
LITERATURE Lars Netopil, Prototyp Leica, 2010, p. 362-371
Development of the Leica M5 began as early as 1965, when first trials were undertaken to incorporate a TTL metering into the Leica M. The model eventually offered as Leica M5 in 1971 was too bulky, heavy and expensive. The main problem was that the camera did not conform to the shape of the classical Leica M – so it was not accepted by customers to the necessary degree.
Offered here is a wooden design model of an early Leica M5 study, which internally was still called “M4”. Leitz designer Heinrich Brosche was responsible for this design, which originally had the rewind-crank located on the camera body’s side.
