Description
(lot of 5) The "Road to Ruin", etchings illustrating the dangers of gambling by Leopold Joseph Flameng (Belgium, France, 1831-1911) after the original works by William Powell Frith (English, 1819-1909), published 1878 (first edition) by the Art Union of London: (1) "College"; (1) "Ascot"; (1) "Arrest"; (1) "Struggle"; (1) "The End", all housed in a hard cover album with fancy metal hinges and clasps, etchings sight: 13.25"h, 17.25"w (excluding titles); album: 24"h, 22"w, 2"d, 21lbs **Note: The album was likely part of the publishers 1878 subscription. It is fitted for only five etchings, each in a partial gilt mat. All etchings are in good condition except the first, "College", which has losses to its face. The album is in poor condition, one side and the spine having most of the leather covering lost, the other side retaining most but not all of the leather. The metal clasps allow the album to be hung from a wall or easel for viewing. Start Price: $500.00
