Rare Early Key-Wind Musical Box by David Lecoultre for the Chinese Market, c. 1838
Playing 4 Chinese airs, with brass bedplate stamped "25" in top left corner, "puppy" foundry mark and "IPR505" beneath the comb, comb with 88 teeth (complete), squared tips and "D. Lecoultre" stamp, instant-stop, black lacquered case decorated with bi-chromate gilt figures, architectural motifs and riders, red interior, hinged endflap and Chinese script on inner lid, width 12 ½ in. (31,5 cm), cylinder 6 ¼ in. (16 cm). One unobtrusively repaired treble tooth, movement in excellent playing condition. Bullied notes that some of David Lecoultre's early movements have a 2-digit number instead of a serial number (see "Musical Box Tune Sheets", p. 132) and dates a box marked "27" to 1838. The movement here displays other unusual characteristics, such as the seven extreme bass teeth which curve around the comb screw. A rare and early instrument, not only in terms of David Lecoultre's output, but also as an example of a Swiss musical box made for the Far Eastern market.

In schwarz lackiertem Holzgehäuse mit 2-farbigen und vergoldeten Motiven von Reitern, Figuren und Gebäuden, mit seitlicher Klappe, Deckel innen mit handgeschriebenen chinesischen Schriftzeichen, Gehäusebreite 31,5 cm. Eine seltene und frühe Schweizer Walzenspieluhr, zugleich ein Beispiel für den Schweizer Erfolg auf dem Weltmarkt. Exzellent spielender Zustand!
