Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797-1858). No. 18 Okitsu from "The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road". Oban. Polychrome woodblock print; ink on paper. Sheet: 10.25" x 15.25" (26 x 39 cm). Old, probably early 20th C.; excellent color and condition.
No. 18 Okitsu: View near the mouth of the Okitsu River, looking out to sea, and two sumo wrestlers being carried upstream, one on a packhorse and the other in a kago. This flat area was noted for its beautiful view of the pine grove "Mihonomatsubara" highlighted by the pretty seascape backdrop. Hiroshige.org
