Rare George S. Gates Raised Pillar Reel

Rare George S. Gates Raised Pillar Nickel Silver Fly Reel. This exceptionally rare example is 2 1/4" in diameter and has a spool width of 1 1/8". The nickel silver frame and hard rubber plates are blemish free. Patented on January 31, 1888 (#377,100), the unique feature of this reel is the sliding bar on the crank that disconnects the direct drive and allows the spool to slip. The drag is adjusted by rotating the knurled knob with click detent on the back plate. It is interesting to note the back plate engraving of "C.A. Hawes, Boston, 1887" predates the patent date. One of only a scant few existing Gates reels in outstanding condition.
